Agnel D’Silva
Master of Science in Information Security Engineering
When a critical IT incident struck the City of Danville, Illinois, it exposed more than just technical vulnerabilities — it revealed a pressing need for stronger cybersecurity leadership. For Agnel D’Silva, then the city’s IT administrator, it was a wake-up call that would change the course of his career. Rather than retreat, he leaned in — driven by curiosity, resilience, and a deep commitment to protecting the systems and people he served.
That journey led Agnel to the SANS Technology Institute’s M.S. in Information Security Engineering program — a decision he describes as nothing short of life-changing. “The program significantly advanced my professional and personal development,” he reflects. “It equipped me with advanced cybersecurity skills, boosted my confidence, and deepened my understanding of critical areas like risk management, ethics, leadership, and communication.”
Now serving as Chief Technology Officer for the City of Danville, Agnel credits the SANS.edu program not only for his career growth but also for preparing him to tackle the ever-evolving challenges of the cybersecurity landscape with strategic insight and confidence. “If I could start over,” he says, “I would do it again.”
In this interview, Agnel shares his path from IT administrator to CTO, his experience as a SANS.edu graduate, and his advice for cybersecurity professionals considering taking the leap into a SANS.edu master’s degree program.
Q: How did you get interested in cybersecurity?
A. My interest in cybersecurity began in 2018 when I was dealing with a cyber incident that impacted my organization. At the time, I realized I lacked the necessary cybersecurity skills to effectively respond. That experience inspired me to pursue cybersecurity and develop the skills to protect the systems I manage.
Q: What is your current position and what does it entail?
A. I serve as the Chief Technology Officer for the City of Danville, Illinois. My role involves overseeing all aspects of IT and cybersecurity operations. I align technology strategy with city objectives, safeguard infrastructure, lead incident response, and ensure compliance.
Q: What was your educational experience before joining SANS.edu?
A. Before enrolling at SANS, I had completed a bachelor’s degree in cyber operations from the University of Arizona and held several industry certifications. While my education gave me a strong foundation in cybersecurity, I was looking for something more rigorous and security-focused to advance my career.
Q: How did you find out about the SANS Technology Institute?
A. Funny enough, it was a casual conversation with a professor that led me here. I jokingly asked what I should do next after my bachelor's, and he recommended the SANS.edu master’s program. That recommendation turned out to be life-changing.
Q: What do you think was most valuable about the SANS.edu master's degree program?
A. The real-world applicability of every course. I was able to apply what I learned in class directly to my organization’s security strategy. The labs, projects, and research all reflected current threats and technologies — not just theory.
Q: What did you like most about the program?
A. The quality of the instructors and the depth of the material. You’re learning from professionals who are active in the field, and that perspective is invaluable. I also appreciated the flexibility to balance work and study.
Q: Why did you choose to enroll in the SANS.edu program?
A. I wanted a program that was focused solely on cybersecurity, taught by practitioners, and aligned with real-world skills. SANS.edu checked every box. It was the only program that truly emphasized hands-on experience compared to programs offered by other universities.
Q: From your research, what differentiated SANS from other programs of its kind?
A. Most programs are academic-heavy and lack practical hands-on training to deal with current threats. SANS is on the frontlines of cybersecurity. Their curriculum, certifications, and instructors are top notch. That made all the difference.
Q: Can you tell me about your experience working with your advisor?
A. My advisor was incredibly supportive and responsive. She helped me stay on track, offered valuable feedback on projects, and provided career guidance when needed. It was clear she cared about my success both academically and professionally.
Q: What's your advice for someone who's considering the SANS.edu master's degree program?
A. Go for it! If you’re serious about a career in cybersecurity, this program is one of the smartest investments you can make. It’s demanding — no doubt — but the rewards are substantial. It will challenge you and elevate your skills to a whole new level.
Q: What's next for Agnel D’Silva?
A. Looking ahead, I’m focused on continuous growth in cybersecurity and mentoring others entering the field. Strengthening security in my work environment to protect people, processes, and technology remains a top priority for me. I’m also pursuing red teaming through the GIAC Red Team Professional certification, with a goal to complete it by March 2026.
