What makes a SANS Technology Institute education different?

The SANS Technology Institute (SANS.edu) offers career-focused undergraduate and graduate programs on the cutting edge of cybersecurity.

Our programs are distinguished by:

Cybersecurity is all we teach — and nobody does it better.

Master's Degree Program

The Master of Science degree program in Information Security Engineering prepares working InfoSec and IT professionals to take their careers to the highest levels through a comprehensive curriculum focused on both technical mastery and the development of essential leadership and communications skills. Rigorous, challenging, and rewarding, the master's degree program helps students develop their reputation in the industry by providing opportunities for their student research to be published in online resources including the SANS Reading Room and the information security policy project.

The constantly increasing threat of cyber crime on e-commerce and e-government has led to a growing need for leaders with a master's degree in cyber security, who can provide both technical and managerial expertise. Our degree candidates gain these skills guided by a world-class faculty of working practitioners, many of whom hold PhD and Master's degrees from institutions like MIT, Carnegie Mellon, and Harvard Business School and have written books used by other security programs.

Graduate Certificate Programs

The SANS Technology Institute's post-baccalaureate certificate programs were designed with two audiences in mind. The graduate certificate in Cybersecurity Engineering (Core) was developed for working information professionals who are unable to engage in the full master's program in Information Security Engineering, but who would benefit from taking all three of the technical graduate courses at the core of the master's program.

For working information security and IT professionals who have an established technical base and seek to deepen their capabilities in specialized areas of InfoSec, the college offers highly technical, hands-on graduate certificate programs in Cloud Security, Penetration Testing and Ethical Hacking, Incident Response, Industrial Control Systems Security, Purple Team Operations, Cybersecurity Management, and Cyber Defense Operations.

Bachelor’s Degree Programs

The SANS Technology Institute (SANS.edu) offers a convenient and economical way to earn a bachelor's degree from the best college in cybersecurity. Students attend a community college for the first two years to complete general education coursework — or earn 70 credits at a 4-year college — and then bring those credits to SANS.edu where they gain in-demand cybersecurity skills. No prior technical experience is required.

Our Bachelor of Science (BS) and Bachelor of Professional Studies (BPS) programs enable students to develop high-level professional skills, intern with a large-scale cybersecurity monitoring program, and earn 8 industry-recognized GIAC certifications — giving them a powerful advantage in the cybersecurity job market.

Undergraduate Certificate Program

The SANS Technology Institute's undergraduate certificate program in Applied Cybersecurity, was designed for college students and career changers who want a rapid pathway to join the cyber workforce. No prior cyber experience is required for this program, but applicants must have completed at least two years of college.

Designed and taught by industry leaders, our undergraduate program provides the knowledge, tools, and techniques needed to launch a cyber security career. In hands-on courses, our students investigate issues that affect complex and interconnected IT systems, learn to combat common threats to valuable data, and emerge with hands-on skills employers are seeking.

Value Proposition

If you look closely at a number of colleges that offer graduate or undergraduate programs in information security, you will realize security is just one more thing that institution offers. The Department Chair often is also the Dean of the Business School or some similar split responsibility. The faculty do not have "street cred."

The SANS Technology Institute offers a program our auditors called "laser focused." Cyber security is our craft and our driving passion. Our college provides security professionals with the knowledge and skills needed to improve the security of information throughout the world -- and we offer a rapid pathway to the cyber workforce for undergraduate students and career changers who are new to the field. Our students and faculty form a community of engaged practitioners that lasts long past graduation.

The research section of our website showcases papers, publications, and presentations completed by our graduate students. Our master's degree program teaches research, leadership, and strong technical communication skills by modeling these core competencies consistently. Our master's degree program is rigorous and challenging, but also rewarding -- and our graduates tell us time and again that earning a SANS degree was the turning point for their career. Many of our graduates become SANS instructors, SANS courseware authors, GIAC exam developers, researchers and incident handlers with the Internet Storm Center. This is who we are. This is our value proposition.

Relationship of the SANS Technology Institute, the SANS Institute, and GIAC

SANS Institute, GIAC, and the The SANS Technology Institute each operates under a trade name, has its own mission, and its own board of directors.

The mission of The SANS Institute is to foster original research in information security using a community oriented consensus approach and codify the results of that work into high quality educational material, and then teach the knowledge with excellence.

The mission of GIAC is to assess and prove the student has mastered the material and has the knowledge to accomplish tasks in a specific skill knowledge domain such as intrusion detection, or perimeter protection.

The SANS Technology Institute is a college that was founded in 2006 as an independent subsidiary of the SANS Institute and as a sister company to GIAC. The SANS Technology Institute has its own independent board, staff, and faculty, and offers graduate programs designed to develop and advance the careers of information security professionals and an undergraduate program for college students and career changers who want to enter the cyber security field. The college's programs are built on SANS classes taught by SANS faculty (who are all SANS Certified Instructors) and industry-recognized GIAC exams that validate their learning.
