Bianca Reynolds
Undergraduate Certificate in Applied Cybersecurity
Bianca Reynolds, a proud 2025 graduate of the SANS Applied Cybersecurity Certificate (ACS) program, has a journey marked by resilience and determination. As a teenager, Bianca faced the heartbreaking loss of her father due to police brutality, which initially steered her toward a career in law. With aspirations of becoming a lawyer, she earned a Bachelor of Science in Legal Assistance and Paralegal Studies. However, after witnessing multiple court cases, Bianca realized that the legal profession wasn't her true calling.
Determined to make a difference, she then pursued a Bachelor of Science in Criminal Justice in 2018, aiming to become a police officer. When the physical demands of the job proved insurmountable, Bianca embarked on a period of soul-searching. It was during this time that she decided to follow her lifelong love for technology — a passion ignited in childhood.
Today, Bianca has found her true calling in the dynamic world of cybersecurity, where she can make a meaningful impact while doing something she loves. Here Bianca, a five-year cybersecurity professional, tells up about her experience as a SANS.edu Applied Cybersecurity Certificate student and provides advice for those who may be considering a similar path.
Q. How did you get interested in cybersecurity?
A. Ever since I was a kid, I had a knack for technology — I was the one who dismantled CD players just to see how they worked. My love for technology has always been a constant in my life. However, the tragic loss of my father due to police brutality steered me away from this passion for a while.
After two attempts at careers in law and law enforcement, I found myself at a crossroads, searching for a way to make a positive impact while doing something I truly loved. During this period of soul-searching, I rediscovered my passion for technology and stumbled upon the dynamic world of cybersecurity. Now, I can make a meaningful difference while indulging in my lifelong passion.
Q. What was your educational experience before enrolling SANS.edu?
A. My educational path has been quite diverse and enriching. I started with a Bachelor of Science in Legal Assistant/Paralegal from Everest University in 2014. Then, I pursued a Bachelor of Science in Criminal Justice from Ashworth College in 2018. My passion for technology led me to earn a Master of Science in Computer Science with a concentration in Cybersecurity Engineering at Colorado Technical University in 2020. Most recently, I was awarded an associate’s degree in Cybersecurity from MyComputerCareer in 2023.
Q. What is your current position and what does it entail?
A. I am a Tier 3 SOC analyst at CNA Insurance, one of the largest commercial property and casualty insurance companies in the U.S. In my role, I manage complex security incidents and incident response, conduct investigations, and perform threat hunting and detection engineering. Additionally, I take pride in nurturing the professional growth of Tier 2 SOC analysts on our team, helping them develop their skills and advance in their careers.
Q. How did you find out about SANS.edu?
Well, it all started when I got the opportunity to work in a security operations center. During that time, I had a coworker mentor named Isaac, who I'll never forget. He was incredibly supportive and always gave me valuable advice. One day, I asked him, "How do I become like you?" That's when he told me about how GIAC certifications had changed his life.
Intrigued, I decided to look into the program. While researching, I discovered SANS.edu’s certificate, bachelor’s, and masters’ programs. I realized this was an amazing opportunity to advance my career and deepen my knowledge in cybersecurity. And that's how I found my way to SANS.edu and the ACS program.
Q. From your research, what differentiated SANS from other programs of its kind?
A. I spent two years pursuing my associate’s degree in Cybersecurity from an online school called MyComputerCareer, where I earned a host of certifications. It was a solid program, but what truly sets SANS apart is its educators. They are current practitioners, up to date with the latest technologies, who provide real-world instruction and advice. As subject matter experts, they bring invaluable insights to the table.
Additionally, SANS offers the flexibility of OnDemand classes, comprehensive materials and hands-on labs using virtual computers.
Q. Why did you choose to enroll in SANS.edu program?
A. Initially, I joined SANS to advance my career and become a Tier 3 SOC analyst. I was surprised when I had to start with the fundamentals, but diving into that material revealed so much I didn't know. Every course at SANS is beneficial and has significantly boosted my confidence and understanding. Additionally, the caliber of the instructors is unmatched anywhere. And the flexibility of the program meant I could pursue certifications on my timeline.
Q. What do you think was most valuable about the SANS.edu ACS program?
A. For me, learning is most effective when I can see it, hear it, and do it. SANS offers a comprehensive approach with books, on-demand courses, real-world labs equipped with virtual machines, and even MP3s for commutes. This immersive experience made the information feel natural and intuitive, unlike my previous education, which felt more like memorization.
Q. How do you think your SANS education has impacted your career trajectory?
A. My SANS education has been a game-changer for my career. Despite my ongoing efforts to further my education, the most significant advancement in my cybersecurity career happened after earning my undergraduate certificate from SANS. Just a month after graduating from the SANS.edu ACS program, I was promoted to a Tier 3 SOC analyst. The GIAC certifications and technical skills I gained from ACS were instrumental in landing this role. Moreover, the confidence in my abilities has soared, thanks to the comprehensive training and knowledge I acquired. It's clear that my SANS education has been pivotal in shaping my career path and opening up new opportunities.
Q. Can you tell me about your experience working with your advisor?
A. Megan Steed is an incredible advisor. She kept me accountable and was always responsive to my questions and concerns. During Hurricane Helene, she provided valuable support and advice, helping me navigate extensions and stay on track despite the challenges. I reached out to her frequently, and she was always encouraging and supportive.
Q. Can you tell me about your experience working with the SANS Career Center?
A. Advisors in the career center helped me tweak my resume and provided me with some great advice on networking. However, I have no plans to leave CNA any time soon.
Q. What's your advice for someone who's considering the Applied Cybersecurity Certificate program?
A. Do it! Be prepared to work hard, as the training is second to none. If you want to build a strong technical foundation and excel as a cybersecurity professional, this program is solid from start to finish.
You will start with foundational courses that fill in any knowledge gaps, even if you already have some background. SANS offers a comprehensive and immersive learning experience. This program will have a profound impact on your career, equipping you with valuable skills and knowledge that you'll carry with you forever. The experiences and insights gained will be instrumental in shaping your professional journey.
Q. What’s next for Bianca?
A. I'm currently gearing up to submit my application for the prestigious SANS master's degree program, which is due in just a few weeks. This program is an exciting opportunity for me to enhance my expertise in digital forensics and incident response, while also honing my leadership skills. My ultimate goal is to transition into a leadership role where I can effectively guide and inspire my teams, driving impactful change and innovation in the field.
