Grading: Standards and Examinations

Grading:
Silver Exams taken by Masters Degree Students
Letter Grade Point Grade Description
A 90-100 Excellent
The student has fully met the benchmark standard and demonstrates exceptional comprehension of the course subject matter.
B 80-89 Passing
The student has demonstrated competency in the subject matter of the course.
-- 79 and below Not a passing grade for a student in the Masters Degree Program. The student does not meet the benchmark standard of competency.
Note: Students in the Masters Degree Program must have Silver Exam scores of 80 (or average of 80 if there are two silver exams for a course) or higher to be considered a passing Silver Exam score. The Masters Program is different than the standard GIAC policy that considers scores of 70 or higher as passing.
Gold Paper
Pass or Fail basis at the present time.
Community Project Requirements
Pass or Fail basis at the present time.
The grade of Incomplete (I)
The grade of Incomplete (I) is an exception and is given only to students whose completed coursework has been qualitatively satisfactory, but who have been unable to complete all course requirements because of illness or other extenuating circumstances beyond their control. Students must request an I from their faculty member. Faculty members, however, are not required to grant the request. Students with a mark of I must arrange to fulfill course responsibilities at a later reasonable time.
Grade-Point Averages
Final grades are used to calculate the student's grade-point average (GPA). If a course includes more than one Silver Exam grade, the average of those scores will be used for that course. For a student to pass a course, the student must not only pass the Silver Exams with an average of 80 or higher, but also the student must pass the Gold paper. In addition, throughout the program, there are "Community Project Requirements" that the students must pass.
Examinations
Students are responsible for obtaining information about quizzes, examination schedules and policies. SANS Technology Institute may require that all exams taken for the purpose of obtaining credit must be proctored. We ask students to complete their exams within 14 days from the time a student is authorized to take the exam. Students may take a longer time, up to a total of 120 days, when the student has a substantial time conflict. All Silver Exams are open book, which reflects the philosophy of SANS Technology Institute that a leader knows how and where to find answers.
