- Alan Paller
- Alan Paller is the Chair of the Board of SANS Technology Institute and a faculty member. He also is Director of Research for SANS, responsible for overseeing technical research programs ranging from SANS weekly threat and news digests to the annual Top 20 Internet Security Threats. He is responsible for SANS' growing public policy research and advocacy programs on behalf of improved cyber security, and has testified several times before both House and Senate committees. Alan is the author of The EIS Book: Information Systems for Top Managers and co-author of Planning and Designing the Data Warehouse and How to Give the Best Presentation of Your Life. He has chaired more than 200 national and international conferences and is often quoted in The Wall Street Journal, USA Today, The Washington Post, and The Financial Times of London, as well as many information technology and information security publications. In 2001 the President named Alan as one of the original members of the National Infrastructure Assurance Council "to advise the President through the Secretary of Homeland Security with advice on the security of information systems for critical infrastructure supporting other sectors of the economy." In 2005, the Federal CIO Council chose him as one of two 2005 Azimuth Award winners recognizing his vision and outstanding service to federal information technology. Alan's degrees are from Cornell University and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Alan has a Masters Degree in Engineering from Massachusetts Institute of Technology; and a B.S. in Engineering from Cornell University.
- Stephen Northcutt
- Stephen Northcutt is President and a Board Member Ex Officio of SANS Technology Institute. He founded the GIAC certification. Stephen is author/coauthor of Incident Handling Step-by-Step, Intrusion Signatures and Analysis, Inside Network Perimeter Security 2nd Edition, IT Ethics Handbook, SANS Security Essentials, SANS Security Leadership Essentials and Network Intrusion Detection 3rd edition. He was the original author of the Shadow Intrusion Detection system before accepting the position of Chief for Information Warfare at the Ballistic Missile Defense Organization. Stephen has a Bachelors Degree in Geography from Mary Washington College. Before entering the field of computer security, he worked as a Navy helicopter search and rescue crewman, cartographer, network designer, white water raft guide, chef, and martial arts instructor.
- Dr. Johannes Ullrich
- Dr. Johannes Ullrich is the Dean of Faculty and Chief Research Officer, and faculty member of SANS Technology Institute. He also is the Chief Research Officer for SANS. Johannes is responsible for the SANS Internet Storm Center (ISC) and the GIAC Gold program. He founded DShield.org in 2000, which is now the data collection engine behind the Internet Storm Center (ISC). His work with the ISC has been widely recognized, and in 2005, SC Magazine named him one of the 5 most influential IT security thinkers in the networking industry. Johannes teaches SEC 503 Intrusion Detection in Depth, SEC 504 Hacker Techniques, Exploits and Incident Handling, SEC 615 LAMP Secure Internet Presence, and other courses. He has a Ph.D. in Physics from SUNY Albany.
- Dr. Eric Cole
- Dr. Eric Cole is Department Chair and a Faculty Member and General Faculty Advisor of SANS Technology Institute. He has been recognized as an information security expert for more than ten years. Eric holds several professional certifications and helped develop several of the SANS GIAC certifications and corresponding courses. Eric is currently chief scientist for The Sytex Group's Information Warfare Center, where he heads cutting edge research in technology and various areas of network security. His writing credits include: Hackers Beware, SANS GIAC: Security Essentials Cookbook and his latest work Hiding in Plain Sight: Steganography and the Art of Covert Communication. Eric teaches SEC 401 Security Essentials, MGT 524 Security Policy and Awareness, MGT 512 SANS Security Leadership Essentials for Managers, OPR 407 Windows and Linux Service and Operations, and other courses. He has a Ph.D. in Computer Science from Pace University.
- Debbie Svoboda
- Debbie Svoboda is Dean of Admissions and Student Services of SANS Technology Institute. Debbie has a Doctor of Jurisprudence Degree, Cum Laude, from the University of San Diego Law School; a B.A., Magna Cum Laude, from the University of San Diego, and a Multi-Subject Teaching Credential from National University San Diego. Debbie has experience in elementary and middle school teaching; commercial real estate management, marketing, and leasing; in-house legal counsel for large corporations; adjunct professor of law in real estate planning; and owner/manager of a business.
- Summer E. Porter
- Summer E. Porter is the Director of Tuition and the Director of Registration of SANS Technology Institute. Her background in higher education includes positions as registrar, director of admissions, and professor for Griggs University and Columbia Union College. She has a M.B.A. Degree from LaSierra University, and undergraduate B.S. degrees in business and communication from Columbia Union College.
- Deborah Jorgensen
- Deborah Jorgensen is the Residential Institute/Director of Conferences and Faculty of SANS Technology Institute. Prior to entering the computer security field, Deborah has worked as registrar for a community college in central Oregon; East Coast and Mid West Account Manager for a software developer; Sales and Marketing Representative and Graphic Designer for a heavy equipment attachment manufacturer; owner of a Marketing/Graphic Design company; Advertising Sales Representative for a newspaper; and Fiscal Manager of a domestic violence agency.
- Mary Zancan
- Mary Zancan is Chief Business Officer. Mary has a B.S. degree in Business and Management from the University of Maryland, College Park. She has worked for over thirty years in the accounting field for small to mid size companies in the Washington, DC Metro area, including Koones & Montgomery, JBG Properties, Inc. and Charles Elwyn, all specializing in Property Management. She also worked as a bookkeeping consultant for a variety of businesses in conjunction with their CPA firms to provide Financial Statements through Trial Balance for income tax preparation. She is CFO/Treasurer of L. R. Zancan, Inc., her husbands plumbing company. Mary has been employed by SANS since February 2000, first as a Full Charge Bookkeeper/Office Manager, then promoted to Assistant Controller in 2004, and now as the Director of Accounting/Office Manager, supervising a staff of seven. Outside of the office, she is active in a community group which adopts a local school each year to help fund special projects.
- David Turley
- David Turley is Systems Director of SANS Technology Institute. He also serves as Vice President of Operations for SANS, and oversees the Network Operations Centers housing SANS production and development environments, and he manages the SANS systems administrators and application developers. Prior to joining SANS, David worked on various Internet development projects, including one of the first secure Internet applications used by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development. He also developed web-based system management tools while working with a contractor at the Pentagon. David developed "pre-Ebay" Internet auction systems and was a consultant to oranizations setting up Internet commerce sites. He holds a M.S. degree in Information Systems.
